If you actually go out and achieve, that is an honor to your mentor. The best edification you can give your mentor is actually passing your mentor... and then help others you mentor pass you up! That is a life well lived.
If you catch up to the mentor, you should always be thankful for the part they played on your journey to success. However, when you catch your mentor, then you have a responsibility to the rest of your team to find someone who still stretches you.
